Neighbourhood youth does not let handicap innovative skills
Valasaravakkam, Chennai - 87
Look out for these peepal leaf greeting cards this season: they are different. They have miniature oil paintings on peepal leaves, or scenes of simple rural themes made of wafer-thin bits of straw on these leaves.
They are simple, attractive and different from the usual cards.
And they are made by someone who is unusual too. I am K. Venkatesh of Valasaravakkam makes them and he has a physical handicapped. He is deaf and dumb. He is 33 Years old and M.Com.
He has been making and selling greeting cards for the last 8 years.
He makes several kinds of cards. The most attractive of these are the leaf cards. These are cards with painted peepal leaves stuck on them.
Processing these leaves is laborious work. Venkatesh keeps the leaves in water for 15 - 20 Days till the chlorophyll wears off.
They are then gently rubbed till only the fine network of thin nerves remains, and then sun-dried and pressed between the pages of a book. At the end of it all, each leaf looks like a fine mesh.
He then paints the leaves : Buddhas, faces of men and women, Woman with pot of water, a brightly-hued butterfly. I am an artiste par excellence. Each of these Cards Cost Rs. 12.
He also creates beautiful Colourful threadwork embriodery, I has been selling around 500 Cards per year through his network of friends and relatives.
He also innovates small lamps with simple plastic tubs and funnels. In his hands, tennikoit rings wrapped in shining material and colorful beads all over become the frame for a mirror.
This enterprising young man is entirely self-made. "I have not learnet these arts," I tells ARCOT ROAD TIMES with the help of an interpreter. I see Programmes on Television and objects in shops and think hard how to innovate.!
I also does Tailoring work at Home. He has studied at the Clarke School for the Deaf, Mylapore, and St. Louis Higher Secondary School for the Deaf & Blind, Aydar.
I can be contacted at Plot No. 71, Door No. 2/8, Chowdhry Nagar, 7th Street, Valasaravakkam, Chennai - 600 087. Mobile : 9884459305 [SMS Only]
